Problem sentence A
I am going to go to downtown to meet my friends. |
Problem sentence B
I am planning to study in abroad after this semester. |
Problem sentence C
What time are you going to go your home this evening? |
오늘 파헤쳐볼 녀석들은 ‘downtown, abroad, home’입니다.
먼저 ‘downtown과 abroad’를 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
*포인트 정리(1)
downtown | to/in the lower part of a city OR to/in the main business strict |
abroad | to/in a foreign country |
* 이미 ‘~으로, ~안에’의 ‘to, in’의 의미를 내포하고 있다. * ‘downtown’과 ‘abroad’는 명사가 아니고 부사(adverb)다. 그렇기 때문에 전치사를 사용하지 않는다. |
*추가 포인트 정리(1)
‘abroad’는 포인트 정리에서와 같이 ‘to/in’의 전치사적 의미를 가지지만, ‘from’이라는 전치사적 의미는 가지지 않는다. 그러므로 ‘from’이라는 의미를 ‘abroad’와 함께 표현하고자 할 때는 전치사 ‘from’을 사용해야 한다. e.g) These cars are imported from abroad. ★주의★‘ downtown’은 품사가 형용사도 있습니다. e.g) a downtown store |
위의 포인트 정리(1)에서 볼 수 있듯이 이 두 단어는 이미 ‘to/in’과 같은 전치사적인 의도(prepositional ideas)를 이미 포함하고 있는 부사(adverb)입니다.
다음 A그룹과 B그룹의 예문들을 보겠습니다.
Group A |
1. After I finished graduate school, I went abroad, and I have lived abroad ever since.
2. I wanted to study abroad, but my parents didn’t want me to leave.
3. Most of the best places that we can enjoy a concert are located downtown.
|
Group B |
1-1. After I finished graduate school, I went to
1-2. I wanted to study in
1-3. Most of the best places that we can enjoy a concert are located in the center of town.
|
두 그룹의 예문들을 각각 비교해보시길 바랍니다. Group A는 전치사를 포함하지 않았고, Group B는 각각 전치사를 포함하였습니다. 그 이유는 Group A의 장소를 나타내는 ‘abroad, downtown’은 부사(adverb)이고, Group B의 장소를 나타내는 ‘China, Asia, America, a foreign country, the center of town’은 명사(Noun)이기 때문입니다.
*보충 정리(1)
만약 장소를 나타내는 단어에 prepositional ideas가 이미 포함되어 있으면 우리는 전치사를 사용하지 않는다. 그러기 위해서는 영영사전을 반드시 활용하시길 바랍니다. |
예문을 하나 더 보도록 하겠습니다.
e.g1) When they built a subway in Daegu, they also built small shops and restaurants nearby, so people who ride the subway could shop and eat underground. |
Corrected as..
I am going to go downtown to meet my friends. |
Corrected as..
I am planning to study abroad after this semester. |
이제, Problem sentence C를 볼까요?
오용례를 다시 한번 적어보겠습니다.
Problem sentence C
What time are you going to go your home this evening? |
여기서 우리를 애태우는 녀석은 ‘home’입니다. 왜냐하면 이 단어는 ‘명사’와 ‘부사’의 품사로서 가장 많이 사용이 되는데 이 때 오류를 범하게 되는 경우가 많이 발생합니다.
*포인트 정리(2)
명사의 ‘home’ | 전치사를 가진다. | the place where one lives |
부사의 ‘home’ | 전치사를 가지지 않는다. | to/at/in the place where one lives |
* 부사의 ‘home’역시 ‘to, in, at’의 의미를 이미 포함하고 있다. |
다음 설명을 포함하고 있는 두 예문을 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.
Example A | I took the bus to my office in the morning, but I went home by taxi.
|
‘home’은 ‘to the place where I live.’의 의미로 이미 ‘to’의 전치사적 의미를 내포하고 있는 부사로서 사용되었다. | |
Example B | If you need a copy of the essays, you can go to my home and get one. I have several extra copies in my home. |
‘home’은 단순히 ‘the place where I live’로 단순한 명사구(Noun Phrase)일 뿐이다. |
